Nestled in a quiet corner of Taman Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur stands an unimposing house, Suria Cahaya Home for the elderly, mentally challenged, bedridden and stroke victims, where their lives are being transformed for the better.
I was there visiting an old childhood friend of mine, who was recovering from drug addiction. He has been in and out of prison and rehabilitation centres throughout his life.
What I saw made a lasting impression on me. To my surprise, l saw him helping the bedridden and the stroke patients to take their daily baths, putting on their diapers and feeding them their meals. l was even more surprised to learn that he is now a part time staff at the home.
“l am trying to be financially independent to help out my family to pay for my monthly rental, not to be totally dependent on them.” He further added that for the first time in his life, he has been sober for over a year since staying at the home. Something no prisons nor countless rehabilitation centres have managed to do for him. “l really feel this place has transformed my life and gave me a purpose to lead a drug free life”, he told me.
Another case of transformation l saw was Uncle Ooi, who initially could not take solid but only liquid food via a tube through his nose. Now, he no longer needs the tube. He is able to take solid food!
Then there is Aunty Weenie, who first came to stay at the home needed the help of crutches to walk and wore diapers. Now she is doing great without being dependent on any of the two. She recently left the home and is now staying on her own. Her transformation is a case on point to dispel the myth that when someone is admitted to an old folk’s home, one to stay there for the rest of their lives. One can get even better and can leave the home – provided that the right support is provided to ensure of this transformation.
At Suria Cahaya, the required support is ensured by a team of dedicated staffs managed by a remarkable woman, Shanti. A veteran of over 20 years in this industry, she made it a point to learn everything about every resident on their needs, likes and dislikes, etc so that she can customize dedicated plan of actions for them.
“l treat them like my children. l always encourage their families to visit them frequently to brighten up their stay,” she said. I was told that the residents are always excited and look forward to seeing her every morning as they each have a list of requests for Shanti.
While Suria Cahaya is not a 5 star or high-end home, it is a modest, comfortable home with hygienic environment, affordable rates, with delicious home cooked meals prepared by Shanti. And most importantly the friendly, courteous and helpful staffs there to ensure that residents well-being are taken care of.
On a sad note, her business is affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and she is looking for 4 to 5 additional admissions to help sustain her home. Therefore, if you are in the spirit of helping a notable cause, help me spread the word. Recommend Suria Cahaya to your friends or anyone who may need for such a home for their loved ones. Come, pay a visit and see for yourself. Shanti can be reached at +6012-270 8417.
