My name is Michelle and I run a home-based food business, “Michelle’s Good Food at Home.” I have always loved to cook and nothing gives me more joy than seeing people enjoy my food.
When I became a mother, my perspective on food changed. Like all parents, serving healthy food for our kids suddenly becomes our top priority. The majority of kids are picky eaters, so simply serving healthy food is not enough, they must be delicious too! This is the challenge most parents face each day.
The year 2017 marked the start of my home food business journey when my picky eater daughter, Claire turned 3 years old. She loved chicken nuggets and cheeseburgers but, I could not bring myself to buy frozen meats from grocery stores after seeing the list of ingredients with additives and preservatives. Moreover, the meats used were also questionable. That was when I decided to make healthy versions of these types of food with no preservatives, artificial colouring, or flavouring. I used good quality ingredients like antibiotic-free chicken, sea salt, and kampung eggs.
After many trial runs and with my daughter as my biggest critic, I finally found the recipe that she likes. I started sharing my food creation with friends and they were very well accepted. My friends bought them from me and even suggested that I sell them on social media. This was how I started my business with only 3 varieties of chicken patties, chicken sausages, and chicken nuggets.
As my girl grew, my menu also evolved from being kids-friendly to food that adults love too. This saves the hassle of having to cook separate meals for kids. Now I have 20 over items of chicken and pork varieties of burger patties, cheese balls, meatballs, chicken nuggets, chicken tenders, chicken ham rolls, and scotch eggs. I also added a new range of Asian flavours such as pandan leaf chicken, paper-wrapped chicken parcels, belacan chicken as well as Thai grill pork neck, and my version of “ayam goreng berempah” fried chicken. In addition, I have some ready-to-eat party platters and roast pork for celebrations.
When the Covid-19 strike in 2020, the whole country was in lockdown, all business dynamics changed. Delivery was my biggest challenge as we were unable to move freely. Delivery fees were too expensive and this hindered most sales. I am thankful to all my loyal customers who continued to support me during this trying time. It was also during this time that I focused on rebranding my business by changing the packaging, brand logo, and taglines. I also took new pictures of my food and created more varieties to attract more buyers of all ages.
I am also promoting on online platforms like “Artisans Haven”, “KRAVVE”, “Vettons” and some local Facebook groups as well as engaging with a few resellers. In moving forward, you shall see more good food from my humble kitchen. As my tagline says, everyone can enjoy “Good Food at Home” without having to spend hours cooking in the kitchen. I will soon launch a whole new range of cooked food. Just heat the packet and it’s ready to serve in minutes.
